Jack's Great Race 2014

Jack Hausmann has run the Great Race at least seven times and is going this year again with his granddaughter, Zoe. She is his navigator, as she was last year when they raced from St. Paul to Mobile!  This year, the 2014 event will start in the state of Maine on Saturday, June 21, and end in Florida nine days later on Sunday, June 29.

It will mark the first time the Great Race has been to the state of Maine, and it will be the first time in 10 years that it has been in Florida. In 2004, the Great Race started in Jacksonville. Other states the Great Race will pass through in 2014 will be Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

They will be giving a running commentary here and friends and family are welcome to contribute encouragement and accolades!

The Great Race has really received new life and vitality beyond expectation with Corky's leadership! I am so jealous that Jack can do this each year!  tonight they stay over in Lowell, Massachusetts, lunch tomorrow in Bennington, VT and the finish line is on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, NY!   Check out Shadows On the Hudson!

Monday's final target is Valley Forge!   (Wayne said he didn't expect Jack & Zoe to be so tall! He hasn't met my girls, yet!)

The Ogunquit Playhouse--the center of Great Race activities-- was visited yesterday by George W. Bush, who wishes the Great Racers good luck. With those words of encouragement in mind, we began our day with instructional activities in the Playhouse. After a quick lunch by the bay, we lined up to start the Hagerty Trophy Run. After four checkpoints, and a few mishaps, we finished the pre-race with two aces* and a final score of seventeen seconds. The day's events were rounded out by a cocktail/Trophy Run awards party. It was a great start to the Great Race!
*Aces are when you complete a leg of the race perfectly.

We arrived in Boston Thursday morning, and we were greeted by unreal weather and fabulous seafood that far exceeded its reputation. We chugged on to Ogunquit, a gorgeous little town tucked into the southern coast of Maine. The VW was inspected, and plastered with stickers. A routine speedometer check reassured us that the little bug is ready to roll. We're looking forward to more seafood tonight, and the trial run tomorrow.

This is the link to the Great Race Regulations.http://www.greatrace.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/event_regulatio...

It is very interesting reading. I think the role of Navigator looks real tough! Mike
