The GTD-Pro race at Road America was a head-scratcher.

One minute the C8.R team of Taylor and Garcia could almost taste the bubbly victory champagne. The next, they’re staring in bewilderment at third-place trophies.

Standing on the bottom rung of the podium, the talented duo tried unsuccessfully to hide thinly veiled disgust at the day’s results.

So if you had stepped away to grab a cold one, you came back to see results that left you shocked, dazed, and confused. How could this happen, you ask?

It was Georgia’s celebration of its long-standing love affair with the automobile. Naturally, this nationwide SEMA-backed event gave car lovers the perfect excuse to revel in their passion.

And revel they did, as the appreciation day brought together an eclectic patchwork of genres ranging from 70’s muscle cars to custom hot rods and pristine classics.

America’s Sports Car, the Corvette, was well represented with third-generation through seventh-generation models on hand. Regardless of what you drove, a common thread, an automotive camaraderie, united everyone.

We had more questions than answers when we first learned of the upcoming event. Though being hosted by the Georgia Street Road Association (GSRA) and Georgia Sherriff's Youth Homes meant it would be a quality event.

But besides that, we had nothing but the desire to know more and a hot tip of who to contact. So, one early morning over breakfast, we sat down with David Riser, event organizer & Vice President of GSRA, to learn more and feast on plate-sized pancakes.

Uniquely American: THE ONGOING STORY OF THE 1932 FORD "LITTLE DEUCE COUPE"

Jack R. Nerad | Jan 22, 2021

The 1932 Ford Coupe is far more than just a landmark car. It is a touchstone, a cultural icon, and a totem that tells a great deal about the land in which it was born and the people who bought it, own it, and, yes, love it. The 1932 Ford was a mass-produced consumer product designed for the multitudes, yet few cars — in fact, few products of any type — have achieved the universal recognition, fame, and sheer longevity of the "Deuce Coupe."

Not only were songs written about the car, most famously by the Beach Boys, but the '32 Ford became the basis of a cultural phenomenon (hot-rodding) that spawned a movement (the Youth Culture of the 1960s). And that demonstrates the remarkable "staying power" of this car because even in the early Sixties, it was an antique car enjoying a new life as the emblematic hot rod. Who would guess that the popularity of the '32 Ford Coupe would still be going strong more than five decades later?

How popular is it? Evidence of that is as clear and direct as the value listed for a '32 Ford Coupe today. The car that sold new for $485 in 1932 now commands a retail price as high as $119,000, which turns the term "retained value" on its head.

From Model T to '32 Ford Coupe -

The story of the 1932 Ford Coupe started in the mid-1920s when uber-industrialist Henry Ford decided that his company would have to replace the Model T, the car that put America on wheels. It was a bold decision because, in 1924, Ford would not only sell its 10 millionth car (in June), but by the time October rolled around, it would sell its 11 millionth, representing an unheard-of sales rate.

Commanding a solid 50% of the American car market, Ford Motor Company was riding high as its Model T "Tin Lizzy" outsold everything else that moved. Yet Henry Ford could see that the competition was gaining ground rapidly as the company's signature and only car model became more and more antiquated. The contemporary Chevrolet offered a more powerful 4-cylinder engine with a more modern drivetrain and better chassis than Ford's rapidly aging Model T, and more expensive mid-priced brands like Nash, Dodge, and Buick were selling cars that were even more refined yet within the price range of middle-class Americans.

These facts weren't lost on the public either. In 1926 Ford's market share plummeted to just 36%. So, even though it had successfully sold nearly 15 million Model Ts, Ford began to develop a new model.

Since they were starting all over again, Ford decided to call the new car the Model A. As development continued, Henry Ford's son, Edsel, became the driving force behind the car. He insisted that it have a conventional three-speed, sliding-gear transmission instead of the Model T's planetary gearset. He pushed for substantially improved engine performance. And he closely directed the chassis and body design to make sure the new car wasn't just better than the old one but more attractive, too.

The Model A that emerged was as handsome as it was inexpensive. With its lower chassis, it was longer and more substantial than the spindly Model T. The new model's hood and cowl were much larger and longer than those of its predecessor, hinting at the bigger, more powerful engine hidden underneath. The car's all-new 200.5 cubic-inch 4-cylinder engine delivered twice the horsepower (40) of the Model T.

Introduced to the world in 1928, the Ford Model A created a frenzy that reached far beyond the mere automobile business. Some people estimated that within 36 hours of its debut in showrooms, more than 10 million people had seen the car in person.

The massive changeover from the Model T to the Model A cost Ford Motor Company $250 million, an unheard-of number in 1928. But the gamble paid off. By July 1929, more than two million Model As had rolled off the assembly line.

But, not unlike the pandemic that struck the economy without warning in 2020, the stock market crashed in October of 1929, bringing on the Great Depression. And it changed the car business forever. Innovation came faster and faster, and by 1931 the Model A — a car Henry Ford hoped would carry the company for at least a decade — was already slipping. Cars like the Chevrolet "Stovebolt Six" were eating Ford's lunch. This set the stage for yet another all-new Ford model — actually two closely related models — for 1932.

The 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe -

Planning to leapfrog competitors yet again, Henry Ford decided that his newest model would not have a 4-cylinder engine or even a 6-cylinder engine like arch-rival Chevy. Instead, the '32 Ford would get a V8. The sophisticated engine configuration promised exceptional power and smoothness, and it represented a radical advance in the non-luxury segment of the market — another giant gamble.

The engine that emerged from Ford's development shop was a 221 cu.-in. powerplant delivering 65 horsepower. Constructed of cast iron with side-operated valves, the new Ford V8 wasn't as sophisticated as the overhead-valve V8s in some luxury cars. However, Ford could manufacture it for a fraction of the cost of a Cadillac or Lincoln V8 yet still deliver similar smoothness and performance.

Ford dubbed the new V8-powered car the Model 18, and its lineup included a variety of attractive open and closed bodies whose looks were similar to the Model A. Among them were two coupe bodies that quickly came to be known as the 3-Window and the 5-Window. The 3-Window has just a single side window on each flank, while the 5-Window has a large door window and a second smaller window behind it. Both are "Deuce Coupes," with "deuce" referring to the fact they are 1932 models.

In addition to the Model 18, Ford also hedged its bets by offering a 4-cylinder-powered Model B in 1932. It, too, was built in a bewildering array of body styles — roadsters, sedans, cabriolets, and coupes. With the same chassis and overall design, the Model B coupes are as attractive as the Model 18 V8-equipped coupes, and they also qualify as "Deuce Coupes."

The new 1932 Fords created a sensation in the marketplace when the automaker unveiled them to the general public in April 1932. Even before it appeared in showrooms, Ford booked 50,000 orders for the V8, and there is no doubt it was one of the bargains of the decade. Customers could purchase a V8-powered Model 18 roadster for as little as $410, and a Tudor (two-door) sedan, the most popular body type, was just $450.

As we noted earlier, the coupe, an upscale body configuration, cost $485. Using the relative strength of its 65-horsepower "cast-iron wonder" V8, a stock-off-the-showroom floor 1932 Ford Coupe had a top speed of 78 miles per hour and significantly better acceleration than the typical car of its era.

That elevated level performance didn't go unnoticed. The general public flocked to the car and purchased more than 430,000 1932 Model 18s and Model Bs. The Model B was overshadowed and outsold by the V8-powered car because buyers could get the V8 for as little as $10 more than the similar 4-cylinder model. The Ford V8's speed made it a favorite of, among others, notorious bank robbers John Dillinger and Clyde Barrow, both of whom wrote Henry Ford praising the car.

The Prototypical Hot Rod -

Since the invention of the automobile, mechanics and backyard tinkerers have always endeavored to personalize them and make them go faster. While the Model T "Tin Lizzy" seems like the antithesis of a performance car, its low cost and ubiquity made it the object of a booming "speed parts" industry in the 1910s and 1920s. When the Model A with its higher-performance 4-cylinder engine came along in the late 1920s, it was natural for the tuners of the day to gravitate to it for the same fundamental reasons; they were cheap, and there were a lot of them.

The '32 Ford Coupe was the next logical extension of that.

Interestingly, of the two 1932 Fords, the 4-cylinder-powered Model B first became the object of the "hot-rodding" craze. The reasons were simple. A used Model B was much less desirable and could be purchased more cheaply than a V8-powered '32 Ford. Plus, the Model B's 4-cylinder engine lent itself to using the same types of parts and techniques used to "hop up" Model As.

By the late 1930s, the "speed" industry was manufacturing a wide variety of parts to increase the performance of both the Ford "flathead" V8 and the 4-cylinder Model A and Model B engines. With hundreds of thousands of used Fords on the market, anyone wanting to build a fun-to-drive car could inexpensively buy a '32 Ford Coupe that could serve as a blank canvas for a variety of modifications. Among the simplest of those was removing the fenders and running boards, ditching excess weight and giving the car a purposeful look at the same time. Voila! A hot rod.

World War II intervened, but after the war, the hot rod culture began to gain steam again. However, relatively inexpensive and powerful high-compression V8 engines like the legendary Chevrolet "small block" changed the post-war hot rodding industry. Installing these engines in '32 Fords became routine.

A majority of the early hot rods were "open cars," typically stripped-down Model T, Model A, or Model B roadsters, but the '32 Ford Coupe continued to grow in popularity to become one of the centerpieces of the hot rod movement. While a true dyed-in-the-wool hot rodder still might point to a roadster as the epitome of what a "hot rod" should be, a strong case can be made for the Deuce Coupe. And one reason is its substantial presence in popular culture.

Pop Culture Icon -

"Little Deuce Roadster, you don't know what I got." As a lyric, it just doesn't have a ring to it, does it? But change it to the phrase, "Little Deuce Coupe, you don't know what I got," and you've got yourself the makings of a hit song.

That's what Beach Boys' leader, Brian Wilson, and collaborator/lyricist Roger Christian thought as they penned the tune in 1963. It first appeared as the "B" side on the Beach Boys single "Surfer Girl," and it became a hit song on its own, reaching the number 15 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 as summer turned to fall that year.

Students of pop music will tell you that the public loves the "ooh" sound, and with a double dose of it in the title and refrain, it only makes sense that the song wasn't just a hit but has also become an enduring favorite. The success of the "Little Deuce Coupe" single persuaded Wilson and Capitol Records to quickly produce and release a Beach Boys album titled "Little Deuce Coupe." With an album cover that used a photo of a blue "deuce coupe" obtained from Hot Rod magazine, the record remained on the charts for 46 weeks and peaked at number four. You can make the case the hit song and hit album did as much for the popularity of the '32 Ford Coupe as the '32 Ford Coupe did for the song and album.

But the Beach Boys tune isn't the only tribute to the '32 Ford. The hit song "Blinded by the Light," written by Bruce Springsteen and covered by Manfred Mann's Earth Band in hit form, contains the lyric "cut loose like a deuce" or "revved up like a deuce," depending upon the version. Both variations refer to the "deuce coupe." Springsteen is a classic hot rod enthusiast.

In the movies, many people of a certain age will never forget Big John Milner's '32 Ford Coupe hot rod in the George Lucas coming-of-age-film "American Graffiti," a movie starring numerous iconic American cars. And on the printed page, horror novelist Stephen King's "The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition" includes a character called The Kid, who drives a customized 1932 Ford Coupe.

'32 Ford Collectability -

The 1932 Ford Coupe's place in the culture and status as an icon has cemented its value. While the overall market for pre-World War II cars has waned in recent years, the '32 Ford continues to hold its value. One irony is it is difficult to find "stock" '32 Ford coupes because so many of them have been turned into hot rods — perhaps several times over — through the years.

The popularity of the "deuce coupe" body style also spawned a long-running cottage industry of replica coupe bodies and even whole "1932 Ford Coupes" fabricated from scratch. These days, owning an authentic 3-Window or 5-Window body rather than reproduction is a mark of distinction.

On one thing, there is no doubt. Whether you like cars restored to their original glory, cars that are modified to give them better performance and personalized style, or you are simply a fan of American pop culture, it is impossible to dislike the "Little Deuce Coupe."
Car Show In Macontag:www.southeastwheelsevents.com,2023-03-16:5072275:BlogPost:12453342023-03-16T15:58:56.000ZChuck Aaronhttps://www.southeastwheelsevents.com/profile/ChuckAaron886

The shortage of automobile mechanics to work on classic cars is a growing concern among collectors and enthusiasts. Classic cars require a unique set of skills and knowledge to maintain and repair, and there simply aren't enough trained professionals to keep up with demand. Let’s take a closer look at the reasons why there is such a shortage of mechanics to work on classic cars, and what can be done to address the issue.

Age and experience: One of the primary reasons for the shortage of mechanics to work on classic cars is the age and experience of the current workforce. Many of the mechanics who are skilled in working on classic cars are older and are either nearing retirement or have already left the workforce. This means that there are fewer experienced mechanics available to work on these vehicles, and fewer opportunities for younger mechanics to learn the necessary skills.

Specialized knowledge: Working on classic cars requires a specialized set of knowledge and skills that are not taught in most automotive training programs. Classic cars often have unique and rare parts that are no longer in production and may require custom fabrication or restoration. This means that mechanics who work on classic cars need to have a deep understanding of vintage engines, transmissions, and other mechanical systems, as well as the ability to source rare parts and materials.

Competition with modern car repairs: The demand for skilled mechanics to work on modern cars is much higher than for classic cars, as there are more modern cars on the road, and they require more frequent maintenance and repairs. This means that many mechanics choose to specialize in modern cars rather than classic cars, as there is more demand for their services.

Lack of training opportunities: There are few opportunities for young mechanics to receive training in working on classic cars. Many automotive training programs focus on modern car repair, and there are few programs that offer specialized training in classic car repair and restoration. This means that young mechanics who are interested in working on classic cars may not have access to the necessary training and experience to develop the required skills.

So, what can be done to address the shortage of mechanics to work on classic cars? There may a few potential solutions, including:

Increased investment in training and education: To address the skills gap in the industry, more resources should be dedicated to training and education programs that teach the specialized skills needed to work on classic cars.

Mentorship programs: Experienced mechanics who specialize in working on classic cars can mentor younger mechanics and help pass on their knowledge and skills.

Promoting the field: The automotive industry and classic car community can do a better job of promoting the field and attracting young people to careers in classic car repair and restoration. Hobbyists need to take their cars out to show in places where young people can see them. Hot rods and restomods need to be seen to be appreciated.

To address this issue, the hobbyists and the industry that supports them need to invest in training and education programs, mentorship opportunities, and do a better job of promoting careers in classic car repair and restoration. The Georgia Street Rod Association advocates for all hobbyists and businesses and invites all clubs to join in supporting Hot Rodders of Tomorrow and the scholarship programs they have for Lanier Technical College and South Georgia Technical College. These efforts are wonderful, yet they’re just a small part of what is needed.
Porsche Vision 357 by Frank Wiesmann Manager, Porsche Product Communications, Motorsport and Brand Heritagetag:www.southeastwheelsevents.com,2023-02-02:5072275:BlogPost:12426662023-02-02T06:30:00.000ZMichael Thieshttps://www.southeastwheelsevents.com/profile/MichaelThies

75 years ago, on June 8, 1948, the 356 No. 1 Roadster became the first automobile bearing the name Porsche to receive its general operating permit – the birth of the sports car brand. Porsche is now embarking on its anniversary year with the Porsche Vision 357 and a reference to the Porsche 356 – Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car. As an homage to this, the concept car brings the monolithic form into the present day. Liberated from the regulations that apply for implementation as a series model, the Style Porsche Team manifests potential expressions of the future design philosophy: one example is the consistent enhancement of the light signature, which is both progressive and visionary in the way it points towards the future. The fundamental concept is reflective of the interplay between tradition and innovation: what would the dream of a sports car of Ferry Porsche might look like today?

356 as a basis to design DNA

“We created a very special birthday present in the form of the Porsche Vision 357, one which uses the 356 as a basis to underscore the significance of our design DNA,” said Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “The concept car is an attempt to combine the past, present and future with coherency, featuring proportions that are reminiscent of its historical archetype and details that visualize the outlook for the future.”

Built on the technology platform of the 368 kW (493 hp) 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the Porsche Vision 357 represents outstanding sports car performance. The exterior concept study is the highlight of the special exhibition “75 Years of Porsche sports cars” at the Volkswagen Group’s “DRIVE” Forum in Berlin, which opened with an exclusive evening event on January 25, 2023. The exhibition will be open to the public from January 27, 2023, and the Porsche Vision 357 will be on exhibit until mid-February. The design study will be presented at the South by Southwest in Austin from March 10, 2023 and at further international events over the course of the year.

Design has been an elementary component of the Porsche legend since the very beginning. Visionary studies and concept cars form the foundation for Porsche’s unmistakable yet innovative design. “Thinking out loud about the future is one of the core missions of Style Porsche. Concept studies are the pool of ideas that feed the design of tomorrow,” said Mauer. “We are perpetually on the conceptual journey into the future of mobility. Time and again, the brand history serves as a source of inspiration. Taking a look back at our tradition with a future concept car is not as paradoxical as it might seem. Creative freedom is also important: this is where valuable ideas can emerge unfettered, ones that help us imagine our consistent design philosophy in innovative new directions.”

Modern interpretation of the Porsche 356

With its monolithic form, the narrow passenger cell with an abruptly sloping flyline and broad shoulders, the proportions of the Porsche Vision 357 evoke the lines of the 356. The windscreen sharply wraps around the A-pillars. As in its historic forebear, Porsche is pushing the boundaries of glass production: early 356 sports cars had a split windscreen with a bar down the middle. The split design was replaced in model year 1952 by a one-piece windscreen with a bend down the center.
The functional details are integrated and underpin the sculptural character of the vehicle. This includes the concealed door openers by the side windows and the tail lights, which sit behind a patterned array of points in the body itself. Another nod to the original is the grille pattern in the rear, in which the third brake light is integrated. Like all current Porsche models, the Vision 357 features a four-point light signet in front. The round design of the headlights is also a throwback to the characteristic lights of the 356. There are also parallels in the paintwork: the two-tone concept with Ice Grey Metallic and Grivola Grey Metallic in the nether regions of the front end hearkens back to the grey tones that were already popular in the 1950s.

The wide track makes a bullish impression and enhances driving stability. The 20-inch wheels are made of magnesium and are equipped with aerodynamically advantageous carbon fiber hubcaps and central locks. Visually, they also recall a legendary Porsche wheel: the 356 A and 356 B with drum brakes had rims with the notably large bolt circle of 205 millimeters.

Sporty details from the 718 Cayman GT4 RS

The “75” anniversary logo adorns the doors and the front of the concept car like a start number. And that is far from the only detail from the world of racing: there’s nothing behind the lower area of the front wheels, which allows better ventilation of the wheel arches. The wrap-around, jointless front hood is fastened with quick-release mechanisms. Threaded rods stabilize the large front spoiler. On the side sills, the Porsche designers employed natural fiber-reinforced plastic (NFRP) – as in the Porsche Mission R, the concept study for an all-electric GT racing car presented in 2021. The basis for the sustainable materials is provided by flax fibers from agriculture. Instead of traditional exterior mirrors, the concept car is equipped with cameras on the edge of the roof. The visible tailpipe trim in the rear is made of a blueish-looking titanium, while the inside of the tailpipe is made of ceramic.

Like the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the Porsche Vision 357 has process air intakes positioned high behind the driver- and passenger-side windows, which designers adorned with comic-style “Air” decals. Like the “eFuel” logo on the tank cap on the right wing, the decals are reminiscent of motorsport decals. The naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine theoretically draws 368 kW (493 hp) from four liters of displacement. The high-speed mid-engine would be designed for operation with e-fuels.

In 1948, Ferry Porsche realized his dream of a sports car: with his team, he produced the Porsche 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster.

About the Porsche 356

The 356 No. 1 Roadster was the very first car built by the Porsche brand. With the two-seater with a multi-tubular frame and mid-engine, Ferry Porsche and his team fulfilled his dream of building his own sports car. The Porsche 356 went into series production as a coupé with a different frame and a 40-PS (39-hp) rear engine instead of the original mid-engine concept. This type formed the foundation for the success of the Porsche brand. After the first largely manually built cars (coupé and convertible) 356/2 with an aluminum bodyshell, Porsche moved from Gmünd back to Stuttgart at the end of 1949. This is where series production of the Porsche 356 sports car began. The sheet-steel bodies were manufactured by Stuttgart-based Reutter body-works while engine production began in Zuffenhausen in space rented from Reutter as Porsche Werk 1 was still occupied by the Allies.

Some 78,000 units of the Porsche 356 had been built by 1965. 356 (“pre-A”, 1948-1955), 356 A (1955-1959), 356 B (1959-1963) and 356 C (1963-1965) were available in a range of open- and closed-top body versions and various performance levels.

Concours d'Elegance is a French term meaning "competition of elegance" and refers to a showcase of historic and/or classic automobiles. They have a long and rich history, with roots that can be traced back to France in the early 1700s. The first Concours d'Elegance was held in the gardens of Versailles, and it was a competition to determine which horse-drawn carriages were the most stylish and elegant. Over time, the Concours d'Elegance evolved to include automobiles, and today, these events are a showcase of some of the finest and most historic automobiles in the world.

In the United States, Concours d'Elegance events began to gain popularity in the mid 20th century, as automobiles became more widely available and collecting and restoring them became a popular hobby. The first American Concours d'Elegance was held at Pebble Beach, California 1950, and since then, these events have grown in popularity and prestige.

One of the defining characteristics of Concours d'Elegance events is their love of Brass Era cars. Brass Era cars are vehicles that were manufactured between 1895 and 1917, and they are considered to be some of the earliest and most historic automobiles in the world. Brass Era cars are characterized by their distinctive brass fittings and trim, and they were a symbol of luxury and sophistication during a time when the automobile was still a relatively new invention.

The love of Brass Era cars at American Concours d'Elegance events is driven by a number of factors. Firstly, these cars represent a turning point in the history of the automobile, and they are a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of early automobile manufacturers. Secondly, Brass Era cars are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, who appreciate their historical significance and their beautiful design and engineering.

it is estimated that there are over 250 car manufacturers in the middle of the era. Many were poised as vehicles for the wealthier and most were built one at a time. They are prized by collectors but are expensive to restore and maintain, and most are not easily driven on modern roads. A large number have been left unseen in private collections and many are sitting in museums around the world.

The growth of Concours d’Elegance events provides an opportunity for the collectors to bring out their prized high quality brass era cars into a competition, where they can be appreciated by a viewing public.

. When it comes to judging Brass Era cars, there are several key factors to consider:

Authenticity: The originality and authenticity of the car are crucial in determining its value and worth. This includes the originality of the engine, body, and interior components.

Condition: The car should be in pristine condition, with no rust, dents, or other signs of wear and tear. The paint and chrome should be in good condition, and the car should have a bright and shiny appearance.

Provenance: The history of the car, including its previous owners, where it was manufactured, and when it was produced, can add to its value and significance.

Rarity: Rare or one-of-a-kind cars are highly sought after and will often fetch higher prices at auctions and concours events.

Documentation: Documentation such as original owner's manuals, service records, and other historical records can help to establish the authenticity and provenance of the car.

Technical features: The technical features of the car, such as its engine type, power output, and transmission, can impact its value and worth, especially for Brass Era cars, which were often groundbreaking in their design and engineering.

When evaluating a Brass Era car, it is important to consider all of these factors and to have a deep understanding of the historical context and significance of the car. This can help to ensure that the car is properly valued and that it is appreciated for its unique qualities and contributions to automotive history.

Diminished value refers to the loss of a vehicle's value after it has been in an accident, even if it has been repaired to its pre-accident condition. This is because a vehicle that has been in an accident, regardless of the extent of the damage, is considered less desirable to potential buyers, and as a result, is valued less than a similar vehicle that has not been in an accident. This loss of value is known as "diminished value." The amount of diminished value can vary depending on the severity of the accident, the age and condition of the vehicle, and the local market conditions.

To get a diminished value payment, you will need to prove that your vehicle has suffered a loss in value as a result of the accident. This can typically be done by obtaining a professional appraisal of the vehicle's value before and after the accident. The appraiser will take into account the extent of the damage, the cost of repairs, and the local market conditions when determining the vehicle's pre- and post-accident value.

You can then use the appraisal to present your case for diminished value to the at-fault party's insurance company. It's important to note that Georgia is consider a “DV State” in that it the law in Georgia that you are eligible for this insurance compensation. Yet the law does not specify how much the payment is!

If the insurance company denies your claim or if you are unable to reach an agreement with them on the amount of payment, the law allows for you to get an “Umpire” to mediate. The Certified Appraiser can help you with this step. Of course, you can always get an attorney to negotiate with the insurance company and/or take legal action to seek the payment you believe you are entitled to.

Collector cars, also known as classic cars or antique cars, are often viewed as a source of nostalgia and a symbol of the past, but they do not typically contribute to the carbon footprint in the same way that modern cars do. Here are a few reasons why:

Low Mileage: Collector cars are typically driven less frequently than modern cars, and they often have low mileage. This means they are not on the road as much and therefore are not emitting as much carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

Old Technology: Most collector cars were built before the widespread use of modern emissions control technology, which means they do not have the same emissions profile as modern cars.

Maintenance: Collector cars often require more maintenance than modern cars, which means they are not driven as much.

Preservation: Many collector car owners take great care to preserve and maintain their vehicles, often performing restoration work or keeping them in storage. This means that the cars are not driven as frequently, which reduces their environmental impact.

Lack of Modern comforts: Collector cars often lack modern comforts and features such as air conditioning, which can cause them to be driven less frequently and for shorter distances.

Limited production: Many collector cars were produced in limited numbers, which means that they are not as widely used as modern cars and do not contribute to the carbon footprint to the same extent.

Appreciation: Many collector cars are viewed as investments and are often kept in pristine condition, which means they are not driven as frequently as daily drivers.

While collector cars may be viewed as a source of nostalgia and a great hobby, they do not typically contribute to the carbon footprint in the same way that modern cars do. Factors such as low mileage, old technology, maintenance, preservation, lack of modern comforts, limited production, and appreciation all contribute to the reduced environmental impact of collector cars. These vehicles are a reminder of the past and a testimony of the evolution of technology, but they are not a significant contributor to the carbon footprint.

Also, the automotive industry has made significant strides in recent years to reduce pollution and improve the environmental impact of cars and trucks. Here are a few examples:

Increased Fuel Efficiency: Automakers have made significant improvements in the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks, which has led to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Many manufacturers now offer a wide range of cars and trucks that can get over 40 mpg on the highway.

Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Automakers have also developed and introduced a variety of electric and hybrid vehicles, which can significantly reduce emissions and improve overall fuel efficiency.

Clean Diesel Engines: Many manufacturers have also developed clean diesel engines, which can provide improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to traditional diesel engines.

Advanced Emissions Control Systems: Automakers have also developed and implemented advanced emissions control systems, such as catalytic converters and particulate filters, which can significantly reduce the amount of pollutants emitted from cars and trucks.

Alternative Fuel Vehicles: Automakers are also investing in alternative fuel vehicles, such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, to reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.

Recycling and Reusing parts: Automakers are also investing in recycling and reusing parts to reduce the environmental impact of vehicle production and disposal.

Research and Development: Automakers have also invested heavily in research and development to find new ways to reduce pollution and improve the environmental impact of cars and trucks.

Clearly, the automotive industry has made significant strides in recent years to reduce pollution and improve the environmental impact of cars and trucks. You do not see smog anymore! Efforts such as increased fuel efficiency, electric and hybrid vehicles, clean diesel engines, advanced emissions control systems, alternative fuel vehicles, recycling, and research and development have all played a significant role in this progress. The industry continues to develop new technologies and production methods that will further reduce pollution and help to protect the environment. There are other culprits to find that are bigger polluters than gas powered cars.

The move to electric vehicles (EVs) is seen as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, but there are also several problems and risks associated with this transition. Here are a few examples:

Limited Charging Infrastructure: One of the major challenges facing the widespread adoption of EVs is the limited availability of charging infrastructure. Without a sufficient number of charging stations, it can be difficult for EV owners to travel long distances or even run their daily errands.

Battery Life and Replacement Costs: Electric vehicle batteries are still relatively expensive and have a limited lifespan, which means that the cost of battery replacement could be a significant financial burden for EV owners.

Range Anxiety: Many EV owners experience "range anxiety," or the fear that their battery will run out of charge before they reach their destination. This can be a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of EVs.

Environmental Impact: The production and disposal of electric vehicle batteries can have negative environmental impacts. The mining of materials used in EV batteries, such as lithium and cobalt, can cause significant environmental damage and human rights abuses.

Grid Reliability: The increased use of EVs could put a strain on the electrical grid, particularly during times of high demand, which could lead to blackouts or brownouts.

Dependence on Non-Renewable Energy: The production of electricity from non-renewable sources such as coal and natural gas, can contribute to air pollution and climate change, that's why, if the electricity for EVs is generated from non-renewable sources, the environmental benefits of EVs may be limited.

Price: Even though the price of EVs is decreasing, they still tend to be more expensive than traditional gas-powered vehicles.

In conclusion, the certainty that electric vehicles will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, is not so certain! There are numerous problems and risks associated with this transition, such as limited charging infrastructure, battery life and replacement costs, range anxiety, environmental impact, grid reliability and dependence on non-renewable energy, and price. It is important to consider these issues when evaluating the potential benefits and drawbacks of the transition to electric vehicles.

Chris Fabina has loved taking good care of cars since he was a boy. He has also been devoted to his community and helping others accomplish their goals, whether as a board member of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Atlanta Lions Club treasurer, or an active member of the Peachtree Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America, where he met business partner Matt Otten.

A car lover since he worked in a car detailing and stereo shop in the 80’s, Matt also likes community service; and has served on the Chastain Park Conservancy board for over a decade. Last year he helped launch the first car show to benefit Atlanta’s largest park.

Chris and Matt were disappointed in the lack of climate-controlled storage facilities besides Store-It-Yourself for their precious toys; so, they picked e3storage LLC, a company founded in 2010, which licenses and services independently owned car club locations around Atlanta and neighboring states, as their answer. There an owner could work in a climate-controlled environment on his vehicle 24-7, as well as enjoy the comradery of other car enthusiasts.

In the spring of 2022, Chris and Matt partnered to find a location in Marietta to open the facility which they call Moto Escape. Membership fees are dependent on the square footage of storage needed, although you Two Car Enthusiasts Launch Moto Escape in Marietta—a Community for Storage/Maintenance of their Toys don’t have to store your car to be a member, since many members just want to meet other car lovers. E3 takes care of billing and other administrative activities needed.

The 24,000 square foot facility is fully equipped with lifts, engine hoist, or other specialty tools to maintain or change a car’s oil; wi-fi access; conference rooms; a lounge; big screen TV; beverages and snacks. Chris and Matt agree: “This facility was founded to empower motor enthusiasts to fulfill their “DIY” (Do It Yourself) and storage needs.”

The facility houses everything from motorcycles to race cars, classics, muscle cars, imports, and everything in between.

Where has the time gone?

It seems like only yesterday we were trying to take in all the action at the 2021 Chattanooga Motorcar Festival. “Trying” is the key word here because the excitement was non-stop.

This year promises to bring back all the action to downtown Chattanooga again.

The third annual Chattanooga Motorcar Festival will occur on October 14th – 16th, 2022. The three-day Festival will include a Concours d’Elegance, the Canossa Fall Rally Chattanooga, The Pace Grand Prix at The Bend, a Mecum Auctions event, and many more family-friendly activities.

Are we living in the “golden age” of Corvette?

Chalk it up to our deep-seated love of nostalgia, but we often think of the golden age as somewhere in our distant past. But, if you go by Corvettes at Carlisle’s record-breaking attendance numbers, you might think differently.

Granted, the Corvette faithful has trekked to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in solid numbers in the past. Usually, though, it’s when a new generation is debuting, such as the seventh & eighth generation offerings from Bowling Green.

We could pull up a bar stool and speculate for hours about why this was a year for record attendance. But at the end of the day, the chart-topping numbers speak for themselves.

10/8/22 is the date to remember.

Why so, you might ask? Well, if you enjoy a well-run, always fun car show featuring Corvettes and Camaros, then this is where you need to be.

If last year was any indication, this date needs highlighting in bright red on your calendar.
So that begs the question, what does this high-energy club have in store for 10/8/22? To find out, we headed to their monthly Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta (CCA) meeting held at Bahama Breeze restaurant in Duluth.

From its home office in Harvey, LA Vicari Auction Company conducts Collector Car Auctions across the southern US including venues in Biloxi, MS, Orlando, FL, Dalton, GA, and previously in New Orleans, LA and Nocona, TX. The owner, Pete Vicari’s passion for muscle cars, specifically Corvette’s, inspired him to enter the Collector Car Auction Arena in Biloxi, MS over 25 years ago. His pastime hobby has grown into a successful auction business that attracts hundreds of cars to each event with sales reaching into the millions of dollars.

Vicari Auction’s longest running event is the Biloxi, MS Auction which takes place during Cruisin’ the Coast each year in early October. In 2013 the collector car event was expanded to three days to meet the demand of Vicari’s growing customer base; and in 2021, they even expanded it to a four-day auction, with memorabilia going across the auction block on the first day. Most recently Vicari Auction added another event in Biloxi, MS during the Mississippi Coast Coliseum Crawfish Music Festival in April.

Just recently, Vicari Auction is being broadcasted on CBS Sports Network, showcasing specialty cars, interviews with buyers, sellers, ringmen, auctioneers and of course Pete Vicari.

Welcome to America’s Largest Block Party. Cruisin’ The Coast® began in 1996 as a festival to celebrate antique, classic and hot rod vehicles, nostalgic music and related events. 374 vehicles registered that first year and in 2017 we had 8,308 registered vehicles. Car enthusiasts from 40 states plus Canada, Germany and Puerto Rico arrive on the Mississippi Gulf Coast once a year to showcase their rides and to cruise our beautiful 30-mile stretch of beach-side highway with designated stops in Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, D’Iberville, Gulfport, Pass Christian, Ocean Springs and Pascagoula. Each venue is set up as a mini festival with a stage for live bands, reserved parking for registered cruisers, spectator parking, and vendors for food and event merchandise. Registered cruisers will receive an ID card in their registration packets to exhibit all week in their car’s front window; this ID allows entry into the venues where reserved parking is available. A program with maps will also be part of the registration packet so cruisers can plan their individual schedules as this is an open cruise – events are scheduled and you decide which ones you are interested in attending. Our week long event includes cruise-ins, a Salute To Our Veterans event, car auction, swap meet, car corral, and a parade. Spectators are welcome and will find that our cruisers love to talk “old cars.”

Cruisin’ The Coast® has 12 Host Car Clubs providing over 700 volunteers who help with registering vehicles, directing cars at the venues, giving directions, and welcoming our guests. These are just the jobs cruisers see. There are hundreds of behind the scenes and pre-event activities that our volunteers help with all year long. When you see someone in a bright yellow staff shirt – that is a fellow car lover who is donating time to make this a fun event for all. If you get a chance you may want to say thank you to a volunteer during your visit.

Cruisin’ The Coast® has become the biggest special event in the state of Mississippi. As Cruisin’ The Coast® has grown, the honors and awards have followed suit. Cruisin’ The Coast® received the Governor’s Excellence in Tourism Award as Festival/Event of the Year in the State of Mississippi (by Jarvis Brannon). Cruisin’ The Coast® was also named the recipient of the “Shining Example Award” for Best Festival/Event of the year by the Southeast Tourism Society, one of the “100 Events for the Year” for 2001 and in 2011 by the American Bus Association and was also named a Southern Travel Treasure by AAA’s magazine, AAA Southern Traveler. In 2007, the Automotive Restoration Market named Cruisin’ The Coast the 2007 Restoration Event of the Year.

We want to thank all of our volunteers, sponsors, participating vendors, and you, the car enthusiasts, who have made Cruisin’ The Coast® the success story it is.
Olde Blind Dog Irish Pub Car Show Is Where Preparation & Opportunity Meettag:www.southeastwheelsevents.com,2022-09-16:5072275:BlogPost:12388782022-09-16T13:11:22.000ZRod Worleyhttps://www.southeastwheelsevents.com/profile/RodWorley

Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser once said, “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.”

If that’s true, Ron Wallace and the Olde Blind Dog Irish Pub Car Show have prepared well for their success.

Over its short time, this car show has quietly garnered a reputation for excellence among Atlanta car aficionados. A casual stroll among the impressive vehicles on hand will prove that statement true.

Lanier Corvettes Unlimited (LCU) doesn’t run from the rain.

Many Corvette club events and local car shows get canceled when the threat of rain reaches a certain percentage. Often it’s around 25% or when the organizer’s joints and arthritis convince them rainfall is headed their way.

Not LCU. When they commit to attending an event, they show up.

Sometimes numbers can tell you all you need to know.

Take, for example, the 29th Annual Auto Crusade Car Show. So for 29 years, this organization has been planning and delivering an event that the car community has eagerly supported.

What Caffeine & Octane fosters at its core is a strong sense of community for Atlanta’s car culture. Ultimately, they get a tip of the hat for understanding community dynamics and delivering an environment that allows it to grow organically.

The result is a collective experience that feels like a much-needed respite from a world that seems more uncertain every day.

In fact, we often call Caffeine & Octane the “Happiest Place on Earth.” You see it in the broad smiles and genuine camaraderie throughout the event.

Here is what we experienced at the September event.

Ever say to yourself, “If I could just figure out what I’m passionate about, everything else will take off”? Most of us define passion as simply the work we love to do.

It’s what we’re deeply committed to doing and doing at a high level. We get a lot of joy out of it, but it will also come with a lot of struggle and effort.

And through each step of the journey, we know it’s worth it.

That’s the distinct impression you get when talking with Brandon Hutchison, the Executive Vice President & General Manager of the Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS). This 27- year veteran of AMS is passionate about what he does.

It shows the minute you start talking to him, as do the enviable results.

Initially, we reached out to Brandon to gain insight into the newly reconfigured track. However, what we got was much more valuable.

We got a rare chance to peer behind the curtain to see what makes Atlanta Motor Speedway a world-class facility.

You can listen to our conversation on our podcast “Brandon Hutchison & The Newly Reconfigured Atlanta Motor Speedway.” What follows here is an edited transcript of our discussion.

"One of the Pacific Northwest's most prominent automotive journalists, Jeff's swap meet experience includes both emptying and filling his truck.

Most car people have looked around their garage or workshop at some point and decided that they need to get rid of about 90 percent of the stuff they've collected. But several things stand in the way - the first and most obvious is "how to get rid of it?" It's tempting to think that you could catalog everything and make a mint selling it on eBay, but who has time to actually do that? The much easier solution is to take it all to a swap meet and sell it there. But that's where the other challenges come up - and here's a secret: all of those challenges are inside your head.

A well organized Automotive Swap Meet, is a golden opportunity to get rid of stuff you're never going to use, and put a few (or very many) dollars into your pockets. To make the most of your swap meet booth, here are my top ten tips. You may not like all of them, but over 20 years as a swap meet buyer and seller, I've come to find they're true.

1) Pack More Than You Really Want to Sell - You really need to think like someone who's never seen all this stuff before when you evaluate what to take to the swap, and what to keep safely stashed away. The basic rules of cleaning-out apply: have you used this stuff in the last year? (OK, I'll allow two years, but not a day more.) Do you have more than one copy of an item? If you're not using it, sell it. If you have more than one item, keep the best one and sell the rest.

2) Bring Food and Drinks - Murphy's Law says that the perfect customer will show up at the exact time you've run off to get a hot dog. Everyone needs to get away from their booth, but by bringing snacks and a lunch, you can increase the chances that you're present for that buyer to find the item "they just have to have" in your booth.

3) Bring a Friend - You'll want to walk the meet yourself, so bring a friend both to share the time and to mind the store. One important point, though: You need to authorize or empower your friend to make deals while you're gone. And no grousing if, while you're out, something sells for less than you would hope -- because no buyer is willing to wait around while you're on walkabout, and any money made in your absence is a plus.

4) Get a Good Spot - At the time I wrote this, there still were a few indoor spaces available at the Portland meet, which is held indoors and outdoors. And you don't need to be on the end of an aisle or right by a door with an inside booth - particularly when a squall drives buyers inside. If you're outside, a tent, EZ-up, or covered trailer are springtime swap meet essentials, as is a space heater.

5) Bring Tables - Buyers don't like to root through piles or boxes of stuff. Sure, some will take the trouble, but far more will just walk right by. And those hardy souls who do dig from the pile won't offer as much for the same part as when it's displayed nicely. Shelves are good, and EZ-Up tents also allow you to hang important items at eye level.

6) Use Signs - Let people know what they're looking at. If you have a bunch of stuff from a particular car model, write it out in big bold letters on a piece of cardboard or a white board. If you have more stuff at home, note that, too.

7) Have Change Handy - You can lose a sale by not having change. Go to the bank before you head to the meet and get a stack of $1s and $5s -- you'll come home from the meet with a pocket full of $20s and $50s, or better!

8) Be Friendly - Nothing turns a buyer off faster than a grouch. If you decline a buyer's offer, remember that they're car enthusiasts, just like you. By the way, everyone nearby - buyers as well as sellers - will notice how you interact with buyers. Will they want to do business with you? Also, buyers are more likely to come back for a second run at an item if their previous stop at your booth was enjoyable. You'll come home with more money in your pockets if keep a smile on your face.

9) Price Things Appropriately - This is where it gets tough. No one wants to leave money on the table. But you didn't drag all this stuff to the meet just to drag it all home again and repack it, right? Absolutely not! You brought it to the meet to move it down the road with another car enthusiast. Keep that in mind in setting initial prices, and holding to those prices if things aren't selling.

10) But Don't be Afraid to Say "No" - Keeping in mind that you really do want to sell this stuff, don't be shy about saying "no" to low-ball offers. If you believe you can sell it for more before the show ends, it's OK to say "No, thanks" to low bids. After all, the buyer may be testing you, and he might meet your price if you're determined. Or, he may return with a better offer. But a last word on turning down offers -- once the item is gone, are you really going to miss it?

I've always had a great time as a swap meet vendor, and I usually go home with an empty truck and bulging pockets. Clearing out the junk feels great and it opens my workshop to the next great project. Follow these easy guidelines and I'm guessing you'll have a great time, too.

Sometimes you have to flip the script.

Over the past three years, Vettes of Atlanta Magazine has published over 1,200 photos of shiny, pristine Corvettes in all their muscular glory. So maybe, just maybe, it’s time to go in the other direction.

To embrace the other side. . . the rusty side.

With our trusty GPS directing the way, we headed northbound from Atlanta to 3098 Highway 411 NE in White, Ga.

It’s the home of the much-ballyhooed Old Car City, USA.

There was only one thing we could count on with certainty from the onset of this excursion. We wouldn’t be bringing home anything new to park in our garage when the sun went down.

Think you can predict the turnout for a car show?

Perhaps you can, but it appears we can’t. We thought the turnout for the Carter Hill Christian Church car show would be good.

But did we think it would be over 170 registered cars and a dozen Corvettes? Nope, we didn’t see it coming.

It seems our crystal ball was a little cloudy on the numbers this time around. Though, to be fair, the attendance numbers can shoot up quickly when you have Rick Ellis and the Georgia Cool Cruisers putting on an event.

Sometimes the most powerful concepts are the simplest.

Planting a flag and claiming territory is one of those. It’s an unspoken rule that when “terra nillius” (no man’s land) is found, the country that plants its flag on the soil first claims it.

Our best modern-day example would be when United States astronauts planted Old Glory on the moon. That simple act was both inspiring and visually profound on a national level.

While Classic Glass Corvette Club of Marietta (CGCC) didn’t plant their flag on a distant planet, they did lay symbolic claim to a portion of Caffeine & Octane’s new venue.

They also put everyone on notice that CGCC was committed to being a part of North America’s largest monthly gathering of car enthusiasts. That gesture wasn’t lost on the other automotive nameplates which were struggling to find their place at Town Center Mall.

Flag planting aside, the question we hear most is, “What was the C&O experience like at the new venue?”

Here are our impressions.
