Steve Schmeelk first became fascinated with cars when he was nine-years-old while playing in the dirt. He has had several careers revolving around cars: including owning a tire store and a limousine company, but none fascinated him as much as driving a MARTA bus for 26 years, his last job before retirement.

Over the last 12 years, he has bought and sold about 20 cars. Among his favorites are a 1937 Ford slant back, a 1930 Ford coupe, a 1948 Buick 2 door, a 1935 Ford pickup truck, a 1949 Ford, 1948 Buick two door, a 1955 Chevrolet, a 1979 MGB convertible, a 2001 Camaro convertible, a 1972 Buick boattail Riviera, a 1939 Hudson and a 2013 Cadillac CTS two door.

His 2021 car project involves trading four of his cars for a Resto Mod Corvette. Upon completion, the red car will have a new LS3 fuel-injected engine, a ’62 body, a 2006 frame and automatic transmission.

When Steve and his wife of 52 years downsized four years ago, he needed a place to buy and sell his fleet of cars. Gateway Classic Cars, part of a national chain, is based in Alpharetta, GA close to Steve’s new home in Cumming, Georgia; so “I could buy and sell the cars there,” he quips.

Before Covid, Steve could be spotted at car shows every weekend, where he shows off one of his favorites. With cooperation from COVID 19, Steve will attend the Rod Run show in Pidgeon Forge on April 15-17, where his Corvette is entered.

A second generation Georgian, Steve grew up in Decatur, Georgia, 30 miles south of his current gated retirement community.

"Christina, my wife of 33 years, and Gateway Classic Cars have made my lifelong dream come true,” says Dean Wasson, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a resident of Peachtree Corners, Georgia. For many years, Dean longed for a 1939 4-door Oldsmobile, so that he could carry extra passengers. (Most street rodders prefer a 2-door,” he says.)

“He takes his baby on daily rides to give her exercise. he boasts. “She gave me the car as a late 71st birthday and early Christmas present,” he says.

His first car at 16 was a ‘56 Chevy Convertible. His dad who was a mechanic gave it to him in perfect condition.

As a veteran, Dean was one of the lucky ones. He served a year in Vietnam and never got wounded like three of his buddies who were killed. Then he had desk jobs in Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco for the remainder of the four years two months and 11 days he served.

After serving in Vietnam, he worked as a customer service manager answering tax questions for the federal government. Christina still works as a senior executive for the federal government. When she retires and travel is permitted again, they plan to resume cruising, their favorite pastime. They have been all over on cruises, including Cozamel, Honduras, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. The first cruise was the Disney cruise with the two grandkid kids.

Dean and Christina are both originally from California.

Clifton Carter's dream car arrived at its new home on June18th. It's a bright red 67 Plymouth GTX. He named it Nyekandu, which means “bright red” in Swahili.

For as long as he can remember, Carter has dreamed of parking that exact car in his garage. Now the car has its own parking place painted green, since he's an Eagles fan from Philadelphia originally. An older friend had a 67 green Plymouth GTX that Carter wanted so badly, but was too young to drive at the time. He ended up buying a Dodge Charger instead, many years ago. He is obviously a fan of MOPAR.

“Then, about a year ago, he decided to search for his dream car online again, and he found it at the Gateway Classic Cars website. What made it his dream car? Carter says the previous owner maintained the original configuration of the GTX, and did a fantastic job of restoration, paint and interior. In addition, Garth at the Gateway Classic Cars of Atlanta showroom, was so attentive on our phone calls, provided guidance, as well as “The Story” that it was an easy decision. To find your dream car is one thing, but to continue The Story with this car was meant to be! The previous owner was proud to know this car found the new home it deserved, and more so, to the man who earned the privilege to take on her care.

Carter spent 30 years in the Navy as a Navy Corpsman and retired at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. His duty with 1st RECON, 1st MARDIV (Marine Division) and Command Master Chief, III MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) were the best tours of his career. He and his wife, who is also a retired naval officer, now live in Burlington, North Carolina. He is an active member of the Alamance County Veterans organization called ALCOVETS. The organization is non-profit, with the goal of supporting Alamance County veterans and their families. Carter says,“I may put her in short veterans' parades for the first year, but that '67 GTX is so pretty that car shows will be in her future.”

Many cars have been in families for several generations; and they have sentimental value way beyond their dollar value. According to Jake, every car has a story behind it—like one of his favorites, the 1965 Chevelle with a manual transmission in the Alpharetta showroom. Its owner has kept it in mint condition, unlike most others of its vintage. It's fully restored, too.

Jake views every car in the showroom as part of an art collection, and Jake and others at the showroom are curators of the collection, which includes Classic, Super and Muscle Cars.

In chemical sales before joining Gateway four months ago, Jake has loved cars since he was three years old, when he could point at the cars and name them. He grew up in South Orange, New Jersey and Johns Creek, Georgia, where he worked in a small car dealership during his high school years. Jake recalls stories of the red 1974 Jaguar XKE his grandfather bought years ago.

Unlike a typical car dealership, Gateway is a non-pressure place where customers are treated like family. “We are helping people find a new toy, one that they've been dreaming about for years.” In fact, many people come in to browse with their families to share the experience. Jake and Gareth Leima, who also consigns cars, have some customers who have collections with over 50 cars.

Jake and Gareth have the monthly responsibility of attending and staffing a table at Caffeine and Octane at Atlanta's Perimeter Mall. The showrooms made a concerted effort in welcoming all, and especially those who have a strong appreciation for antique, classic, collector, and exotic cars. There was plenty for all to view and ponder the possibility of owning something from their past! The smiles and stories shared was enjoyed by many, even the young who endured the boredom of grandparents doing most of the talking! There is just a different type of individual who enjoys the beauty of older cars, and compassion for those who may not have for the Christmas Holiday. At the Alpharetta showroom, we had a wet turn-out with all the rain that came through the Southeast, but that didn’t deter the spirit of those who decided to go out on a lousy rainy day!

Gateway Classic cars , one of the largest, oldest classic car consignment dealers in the world, celebrated the first anniversary of its’ Alpharetta , Georgia showroom on August 29. In business since 1999, there are 15 other showrooms throughout the US, including Dallas Chicago, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Tampa,Nashville,St.Louis,Detroit,Orlando,Louisville,Denver,Houston, Ft. Lauderdale, Scottsdale, and Philadelphia.

“All cars must pass a quality inspection” says Jeff Cole, consignment representative, “and we finance nationwide with 4-5 national banks that work with classic cars exclusively.” In addition, Gateway ships vehicles worldwide, including recent sales to Canada, Guatemala, Jordan, Europe and Australia. With three ports nearby, Charleston SC, Savannah Ga., and Brunswick, Ga. international sales can be handled with ease. “We have several dealers around the US, from as far away as New York, that take advantage of Atlanta and its’ local economy, interstate system and airport, which all aid in selling these classic vehicles”, he says.

Gateway has a trade network that allows them to take trades in another showroom, on a car or truck for sale in the Atlanta showroom. For example, a man recently traded three vehicles ( a 68 Mustang, 79 Trans Am and a 48 GMC truck) in Atlanta for a 2014 Corvette in Gateways’ Orlando showroom.

The company occasionally gets consignments that were once owned by celebrities, including a 59 Rolls Royce once owned by Mary Wilson of the Supremes, a Mercedes once owned by Mick Mars of the band Motley Crue, and a 70 Ford truck once driven in a movie, and signed by Robert Duvall.

Jeff Cole is very proud of Gateway’s teamwork and dedication to giving back to the local community. “We have hosted many local car club meetings, including Georgia Street Rod Association, Atlanta Jaguar Society, the Austin Healey Club, Dixie Olds Club, etc., and collects toys and donations for Toys For Tots each winter which are distributed by the ROMEO Club.” The showroom sponsors “Coffee and Cars”, with complimentary coffee and pastries on the last Saturday of each month.

Eventually, the company plans to operate 20 or more stores in the Us and Canada. It has consigned over 14,000 exotic, classic, and collector vehicles. In fact, over 11% of all sales are exported.

The occasion was appropriately called Caffeine and Exotics, a unique show partially benefitting Make a Wish Foundation.

Prior to the event, the Caffeine & Exotics team chose the best out of 300+ applications from private owners to display their exotic cars. "Our goal was to get 50-60 exotic cars and we ended up with 230," said Bruce Piefke, creator of Caffeine and Exotics as well as the owner of the “Caffeine and Octane” meet (acquired from Autotrader Classics) held on the first Sunday of every month from 8:00 am--11:00 am at Atlanta's Perimeter Mall. He plans to put together Caffeine and Exotics events several times per year.

Sponsors for the show on April 17 included: Butler Tires & Wheels, Porsche Atlanta Perimeter, Magnum Collision Repair Center, Rolls Royce Motorcars of Atlanta, Motorcars of Georgia, Detawiled Designs Auto Spa, and Granite Garage Floors.

"I knew that very few exotic car owners would get up on Sunday morning to attend Caffeine and Octane at Perimeter Mall, so I created a special show aimed at them." Piefke spent 25 years organizing commercial events and got into the automotive genre in recent years helping Autotrader Classics and other companies. He clearly has a real magic touch and now car shows are in his blood.

The show drew a large variety of car enthusiasts, such as Steve Bracken, who owns a 2015 Z51 Corvette and a Cadillac for everyday driving; management consultant Dr. Craig Gustin who drives his 1967 Mark 2 as his main car around Buckhead; and Chris Grigalunas, a former race car driver and founder of Azul Motorsports where he shares his motorsports passion with the masses.

Whether in fashion or cars, it is a matter of picking the right item/style and the right color says Tevie Dante Fraser, co-owner of Fraser Dante LTD, with her husband Thomas Fraser. The decision to go into business started with one car and lots of Passion, a 1972 Red Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible, which was a great pick 28 years ago. That choice has evolved into a full show room with around 50 cars plus! The husband-wife team speaks from experience—in the 70’s TOM drove Corvettes, Chevrons and Lola’s within the International Race Series from Daytona to Watkins Glen to Sprint Cup Series as well as being active in current Sports Car and Indy racing. Always Entrepreneurs, they both spent time in Owner/Management at women’s clothiers, Casual Corner, T. Edwards and Florida Adams. They were very successful in the fashion business, but then Tom Fraser wanted to follow his passion that lead to the Classic and Special Interest Car Business.

In business in Roswell for all of their 28 years, they sell about 60 to 80 cars a year in the major worldwide arena. Many include restored Mustangs, imports and muscle cars to buyers in France, Moscow, Norway, UK and Canada. Saturdays being there busiest day as they often have an OPEN HOUSE and could have a great day with about 40-50 or so people in the show room. They have also sponsored tours and clubs to have their meeting at Fraser Dante. For example during the 50th Anniversary of the Mustang, they had a large Car Club from France in to get the tour and royal treatment!

In marriage and business, they know their strengths—TOM runs the business, picks the cars, does the very informative descriptions and prices them; and Tevie is the Head Maitre D and the main seller in the business both in the show room, on the phone and through the internet and all the social media. Their right hand, CFO, has been with them for over 24 years and wears many important hats,: including handling the money and working with all the documents to complete a sale. She is the company’s Queen of the Internet!!!!

“We’re very hands-on,” says Tevie. Fraser Dante is a dealership where the staff educates its clients and shows them features and options regarding the cars or trucks, shows them the workshop and if weather permits a small test drive. Fraser Dante tries hard to not just have pretty cars but cars that work well, even though most of the cars are 25-75 years old. Not surprisingly, accolades have come from many prestigious entities. They were chosen by Ford Motor Company for the Collector Car Series that featured their 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang. At Amelia Island in March, they represented a 1965 Shelby Mustang R Model which sold for $984,500.00; and they were invited to the Amelia Island Concourse d’ Elegance where they represented a 1955 Ford Thunderbird and a 1964 Pontiac GTO convertible.

Not only do they have longevity in their relationship—met in 1978, worked together for years and married in 1981--but they believe in having a qualified and passionate staff with a track record. Not only do they maintain a car for customers, but also they keep it in great running order and refresh the cosmetics too.

Fraser Dante has more staff working on cars then the selling of them. If they work well and look good, then the sales will be there!! In addition, they have two fabulous and talented mechanics and a visiting British mechanic to keep their import section running well! Many celebrities (even without a showroom visit) have ordered from Fraser Dante—a pickup truck to John Travolta, Charlie Sheen bought six cars and Conan O’Brien a ’52 Ford truck. Not only the Movie Stars are interested in the dealership’s quality service and selection of cars, but also Fraser Dante’s cars have appeared in the Fast and Furious movies, and the new Usher music video features a ’67 GT convertible from the showroom. Other prestigious customers are the Oldsmobile Museum, the General Motors Museum and Ford Motor Company.

Most important, unlike buyers of the past, families and celebrities alike buy classic cars for driving—not just to look at them. They want to enjoy cars at car shows, cruise nights, cruises, and just good weather weekends.

“Our clients come from all over the U.S.-- and as far as the Virgin Islands,” says Henry County resident and business owner Mark Engel, who started Atlanta Auto Restoration in Hampton, Georgia nearly nine years ago. After two years of conversation about the meticulous process he and his staff of five go through to restore a car, the client shipped his car.

Engel believes that his process of entirely disassembling a car makes Atlanta Auto Restoration unique. Since the late 1980’s when he attended Northern Kentucky Vocational Technical School in Covington, Kentucky, he has honed his skills and worked toward a dream— owning his own auto restoration shop. He worked for other people, including an antique auto shop as an automotive painter and Delta Airlines restoring airplanes. He restored Corvettes part-time.

With plans for further growth of the company, Engel is eyeing a location in Newnan or Locust Grove in the near future. In his spare time, he enjoys classic cars, especially Corvettes, as well as aviation and history.

Mark is very active in the Georgia Street Rod Association and supports such causes as Hot Rodders of Tomorrow and the March of Dimes.
